Department of Burns and Plastic Surgery
The Department of Plastic, Reconstructive & Burns Surgery is an integral and vital part of any tertiary and teaching hospital. Keeping in mind the motto of AIIMS to provide the best possible in-patient care, medical education, and research, the department was established with two faculty; one Associate Professor and one Assistant Professor.
Vision & mission:
There is a common misconception among the general populace that equates Plastic & Reconstructive surgery to cosmetic surgery and burns. Cosmetic surgery and burn are only small parts of the huge spectra of work that encompasses this magnificent branch of surgery. All sorts of reconstructive procedures that are limb-saving, life-changing, and at times, even life-saving, are undertaken under the auspices of Plastic Surgery. Patients requiring complex reconstructions often go outside this North East region for treatment due to various issues. The vision of the department is to establish a state-of-the-art reconstructive facility that will cater to even the most complex reconstructive needs of the patients.
At present the department is in the early stage of development. We are providing outpatient consultation services from our designated OPD space on the Second floor, A block, OPD complex. Dressing and wound management facilities are available in a limited manner which is in the process of getting upgraded.
All the facilities will be started in a phased manner. The following services will be provided by the department in the near future:
All types of congenital anomalies like Cleft lip and palate, ear deformity, hand anomalies like syndactyly, polydactyly, trigger thumb, vascular malformations, etc
Primary or secondary trauma reconstruction in the forms of wound coverage by grafts, various flaps, microvascular free tissue transfer, vascular injury repair, nerve injury repair, replantation of amputated parts in suitable cases, hand injury reconstruction, etc will be done.
Primary or secondary reconstruction of post-oncosurgery defects of the head & neck region, breast, limb, abdomen, chest wall, perineum & genitalia, etc will be undertaken.
Acute burns management and post-burn deformity and contracture correction by various soft tissue correction procedures, bony procedures, etc.
