Department of Pharmacology, AIIMS Guwahati

The Department of Pharmacology commenced its services since the inception of the Institute. The vision of the Department is to develop into a center of excellence in pharmacology that integrates the three-pronged approach of AIIMS institutions—Education, Patient Care, and Research. The Department strives to advance safe, rational, and evidence-based use of medicines, while fostering innovation in pharmacological sciences and clinical practice.

The Department plans to achieve this in the following manner:

1. Education

The Department of Pharmacology is dedicated to imparting comprehensive education in basic, clinical, and experimental pharmacology. The goal is to nurture students with sound knowledge of drug actions, therapeutic applications, and adverse drug reactions, while instilling critical thinking, ethical values, and research aptitude.

  • MBBS teaching has been initiated in the year 2021.
  • The Department has started postgraduate MD (Pharmacology) and plans to start doctoral programs including, MSc (Pharmacology), PhD (Pharmacology), and DM (Clinical Pharmacology) in the near future.
  • Training also extends to allied health sciences and interdisciplinary collaborations, with emphasis on modern drug discovery, pharmacovigilance, and personalized medicine.
  • The Department regularly organizes workshops, CMEs, and training programs to update students, clinicians, and researchers with the latest advancements in pharmacology and therapeutics.

2. Patient Care

The Department actively contributes to patient care through Clinical Pharmacology Services, with the aim of promoting rational drug use and ensuring patient safety.

  • Services include therapeutic drug monitoring, pharmacovigilance, adverse drug reaction (ADR) reporting, and drug utilization reviews.
  • The Department aspires to establish a state-of-the-art Clinical Trials and Research Centre (CTU) to support drug development, bioequivalence studies, and translational research.
  • Future goals include the development of personalized medicine strategies, dose optimization protocols, and integration of pharmacogenomics into clinical practice.
  • The Department is committed to promoting medication safety and improving treatment outcomes across the community.

3. Research

The Department is committed to high-quality research in both basic and clinical pharmacology. Focus areas include drug discovery, molecular pharmacology, pharmacogenomics, neuropharmacology, cardiovascular pharmacology, oncology, toxicology, and pharmacovigilance.

  • Research is carried out in the form of extramural and intramural projects, MD and PhD theses, and independent faculty/student initiatives.
  • The Department envisions collaborations with national and international institutes to drive multidisciplinary and translational research.
  • A strong emphasis is placed on innovation, with the goal of contributing to the development of new drugs, therapies, and treatment modalities that address current and emerging healthcare challenges.
