The Department has been engaged in medical education through new-age teaching modalities since its inception. The MBBS and MD curriculum is constantly refreshed for new knowledge and updates in the field of medicine, along with the induction of skill-based learning.

The Department has the following academic programs currently,

  • MD Pathology (yearly intake of 5 students)
  • MBBS

The Department envisioned to start the following courses shortly,

  • DM in hematopathology,
  • DM in Oncopathology,
  • Post-doctoral certificate course (PDCC) in Renal and Transplantation pathology, Dermatopathology, and Molecular Pathology.
  • PhD program.

Vision and Mission:

The vision of the Department is to emerge as a leader in the field of Pathology in India, with a special emphasis on serving the northeastern region. This will be achieved through the delivery of high-quality diagnostic services, advanced research, and comprehensive education and training for the next generation of pathologists.

2. CLINICAL SERVICES OFFERED

The Department currently provides a wide range of diagnostic services to support evidence-based patient care, including:

  • Clinical Pathology and Hematopathology: Routine and specialized hematology, including Coagulation studies and flowcytometry, workup of Leukaemia and Lymphomas, Bone marrow aspiration and Biopsy studies, Bone marrow iron studies, Hemoglobinopathies, etc.
  • Cytopathology: FNAC, USG Guided FNAC, Pap smears, Body fluid analysis, and non-gynecological cytology, including Squash smears and intra-operative consultations.
  • Histopathology, IHC, and immunofluorescence: State-of-the-art diagnostic services, including immunohistochemistry (with more than 100 IHC markers) and immunofluorescence (for both renal and skin biopsies), including FISH microscope facilities for cytogenetic studies.
  • Cancer cytogenetics: Interphase FISH for oncologic specimens.
  • Research Support: Tissue block and slide preparation for extramural scientific and research organizations.
  • Frozen Section sections: for intra-operative consultations like sentinel lymph node status, surgical margin status, and diagnosing tumors.

Upcoming Services:

In the near future, the department will expand to include advanced molecular and digital diagnostics, such as:

  • Molecular testing on FNAC samples
  • Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) for mutation detection in malignancies
  • Clonality Assays in Lymphomas

Clinical Services :

  • Body fluid assay with routine and special stains
  • Semen analyzer- getting it in 2026.

The Department of Pathology plays a pivotal role in supporting the Institute’s patient-care services by providing comprehensive diagnostic facilities essential for accurate disease detection, monitoring, and prognostication. Currently, the Clinical Pathology, Hematology, Cytopathology, and Histopathology laboratories offer a wide spectrum of routine and specialized tests across morphological, hematological, and cytological domains. The Department is also expanding its services to include advanced biomarker assessment through molecular pathology, genomics, and proteomics-based techniques. In addition, emphasis is placed on strengthening primordial and primary screening programs for diseases prevalent in the community. To ensure the highest standards of quality, accuracy, and reliability, the Department has initiated the process for obtaining NABL accreditation for its clinical and anatomic pathology laboratory services

Services Available:

  1. Histopathological examination -Biopsies and Specimens
  2. Frozen Section
  3. Immunohistochemistry
  4. Immunofluorescence
  5. Forensic pathology-autopsies

Teaching & Training :

The Department strives to nurture the next generation of Pathologists by strengthening education in diagnostic histopathology, cytology, hematopathology, transfusion medicine, and molecular pathology. With MBBS teaching initiated in January 2021 and the subsequent launch of the MD (Pathology) program in January 2024, the Department continues to broaden its academic horizons. It offers specialized training to allied specialties and is actively working towards introducing additional postgraduate and fellowship courses through interdisciplinary collaborations. Regular CMEs, workshops, and practical training sessions ensure continual exposure to evolving technologies and advancements in pathology. The Department also plays a key role in teaching Pathology to B.Sc. (Nursing) students of the Institute.
