Padma Shri recipient Prof. Bhupendra Kumar Singh Sanjay is the world-renowned orthopaedic surgeon from Dehradun, Uttarakhand, India who has given his distinguished medical and social services to the public by saving hundreds of lives and limbs inflicted with trauma and tumors whose name has been recorded in Guinness book of world records and Limca book of records for his outstanding surgical achievements and in India and International Book of Records for his rare outstanding social achievements. Prof. Dr. Sanjay is an accomplished and acclaimed orthopaedic surgeon, author, writer, poet, orator and social worker.
Dr. B. K. S. Sanjay is born on 31 August 1956 in rural and remote area of Bundelkhand in India. Dr. Sanjay has received his basic orthopaedic education and training from India and higher orthopaedic training and fellowships from abroad. He has done MBBS from GSVM Medical College Kanpur in 1980, MS Orthopaedic from PGI Chandigarh in 1986 and senior residency from Central Institute of Orthopaedic Safdarjung Hospital, New Delhi (1983-1986). On the basis of the merit, he had been awarded Swedish Government Fellowship in 1986, Swiss AO International Trauma Fellowship in 1998, Japanese Chiba Cancer Centre Fellowship in 1990, Government of India, DST, BOYSCAST Fellowship in 1991, American Mayo Clinic Visiting Clinician Fellowship in 1991, Australian Royal Adelaide Hospital Spinal Fellowship in 1999 and Russian Ilizarov Scientific Centre Fellowship in 2011.
In the past, he had worked as an assistant Orthopaedic surgeon in King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and associate professor in PGI Chandigarh and professor and head of the department at Himalayan Institute Jolly grant Dehradun, India. He has presented more than 150 papers in various national and international conferences and published his academic work in top rated indexed international journals like Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery (both British and American Volume), Journal Hand Surgery (British Volume), International Orthopaedics, Indian Journal of Cancer etc.

He is the Founder President of Uttaranchal State Chapter of Indian Orthopaedic Association and a member of National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS) and fellow of International Medical Sciences Academy (IMSA). He has been advisor to state and Union Public Service Commission selection boards and Member of Expert’s Committee of Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University, Srinagar (Garhwal). Currently he had been a member of executive council of HNB Uttarakhand Medical Education University, Dehradun and a nominated member of academic council of centrally funded Gurukul Kangri University Haridwar. He is a multi-faceted personality who is renowned in his medical as well as social works.

On 9 November 2021, Dr. Sanjay has been honored with Padma Shri award (fourth-highest civilian award of republic India) by president of India in Rashtrapati Bhawan, New Delhi for his distinguished medical services. Padma Shri recipient Dr. B. K. S. Sanjay has been invited by the Lok Sabha Secretariat (Parliamentary Research and Training Institute for Democracies) to share his experiences of Public Health Awareness and Orthopaedic Camps in medical fields during interactive session for the benefits of honorable Members of Parliament on 24th April 2022 in parliament house complex, New Delhi. He expressed his concern to them about deformities and disabilities caused due to polio, CP and road traffic accidents which are increasing the poverty in the society and creating hurdle in growth of the nation.
Padma Shri Prof B. K. S. Sanjay has been facilitated in 66th Annual Conference of Indian Orthopaedic Association in Goa in December 2021 by Indian Orthopaedic Association for his valuable contribution in growth and development of orthopaedic surgery. He has been bestowed Life Time Achievement Award by Uttarakhand Orthopaedic Association, Special Orthopaedic Recognition Awards by Uttar Pradesh Orthopaedic Association in 2022. Prof. Dr. B. K. S. Sanjay has been honored with Dr. S. C. Gaur Oration 2022 by Prayagraj Orthopaedic Association and Dr. B. Mukhopadhyay Oration by Bihar Orthopaedic Association in 2023 and various other awards by Uttarakhand, UP, Central Zone and Indian Orthopaedic Associations respectively. He is currently Swachhta Brand Ambassador under Swachh Bharat Mission in Nagar Nigam Dehradun and motivational speaker in various Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self Reliant India) program.
Dr. Sanjay had set a world record under the category of Largest Bone Tumor Removal. He had removed the largest bone tumor of the femur weighing 16.5 kilogram from a 35-year-old male patient. This record featured in Guinness Book World Records in 2005. Indeed, it is a rare and great achievement for Dr. Sanjay. Dr. Sanjay name also features in Limca Book of Records in 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2009 for different innovative and successful surgical achievements, like hip replacement surgery in 98 years old high-risk patient, re-implantation of autoclaved steam sterilized tumor bone to save the limb and life of a teenager girl suffering from bone cancer, for removing the largest bone tumor and for doing a successful spine operation in an 88-year-old man.
Polio and cerebral palsy are the common causes of paralysis and disability in children in our country. He is regularly giving his services through free camps for these disabled patients and has done more than 5000 operations in polio and CP children and made their life better through his surgical skills in his 40 years of orthopaedic career. Dr. Sanjay has organized more than 200 free health camps in in both urban and hilly areas of Uttarakhand, Himachal and Uttar Pradesh to serve the poor and needy which had been recorded in India book of records in 2017.
He has seen various aspects of road traffic accidents in his 45 years of his professional career. Seeing the personal, social and financial suffering of victims of road traffic accidents and being an orthopaedic surgeon, he has taken a resolve to increase awareness among the affected and general public about the impact of road traffic accidents in India, hence, started a public awareness campaign since 2001. Under the road safety awareness campaign, he has given the dozens of programs from AIR and Doordarshan, Dehradun and Delhi and he and his team has delivered free public awareness lectures in different educational institutions in Uttarakhand and its neighbouring states. This rare social outstanding achievement has been commended by Uttarakhand Transport Minister and Director Traffic Uttarakhand and also accepted for published in India book of records in 2020. He has organized a road safety public awareness seminar under the guidance of the Honorable Governor at Uttarakhand Raj Bhavan on 30 April 2025 in which the Chairman of the Central Road Transport Institute of the Government of India, Sanjay Orthopaedic, Spine and Maternity Center's Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Gaurav Sanjay and police, traffic, health, education, transport, tourism and army officials participated. He is written a book “Bharat main Sadak Durghatnayein” in hindi which is under publication by National Book Trust.
He is organizing an Indian Orthopaedic Association National Bone and Joint week every year and giving free consultation, surgery to poor and needy and awareness program through Radio, T.V. and print media during a week-long program. He is giving free orthopaedic consultation to Below Poverty Line (BPL) card holders on every Saturday. He is spreading awareness about health-related social issues and distributing a free monthly health post paper to the patients for last more than 14 years. Besides medical writings, he has written hundreds of accidents related articles including more than 100 guest columns in one of the leading English newspapers. This has been acknowledged and recorded in International Book of Records 2021. He has also rendered his social services during Covid-19 pandemic by writing many awareness columns in leading Indian newspapers and by giving many awareness programs on radio and TV. For that he has been honored with Corona warriors Award 2020, Unstoppable Covid 19 fighter 2020 and Shewa Ratna Samman 2020.
Dr Sanjay is not only a renowned surgeon and social worker but also an outstanding writer, orator and a columnist who has command on both Hindi and English languages. It is unique for a surgeon to write poetry. Dr Sanjay not only reconstructs bones and joints but also creates high quality poetry as seen in his maiden collection. His poems deal with motley subjects including love, affection, service and compassion for society.
Dr. Sanjay presented the first copy of his first poetry book "Uphar Sandesh Ka" to the Hon’ble Vice President of India, Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu and Hon’ble President of India. Smt. Draupadi Murmu which is published by Bharatiya Jnanpith. The message that Dr. Sanjay gave to the society through poetry is a unique gift to the society. This book is released by Chief Minister of Uttarakhand Shri Pushkar Singh Dhami. He has been honored with “Kavya Bhushan Samman” for his poetry book at Hindi Bhawan, New Delhi.
Health, education and nutrition are fundamental needs of every individual. There is need for awareness about them in the society. Besides medical writing, Padma Shri recipient Dr. Sanjay has written more than a hundred guest columns in a prestigious English newspaper which is compiled in the form of a book entitled “From the Pen of Surgeons” to further spread the awareness about health, education and nutrition in the society. The book is published by Prabhat Prakashan and released by Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat union Minister of Government of India.
Padma Shri recipient Prof. Sanjay has shared the dais as a Guest of Honor with the Chief Guest Hon’ble Former President of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovind during the convocation of Jayoti Vidyapeeth Women’s University, Jaipur on 18th April 2023. It was a matter of pride and privilege to him. Dr. B. K. S. Sanjay has been honoured with Guinness World Record once again at the prestigious Lord's Cricket Ground in London on 3 December 2023. He has been honoured as one of the 23rd positive change makers in the world in 2023.
