Introduction

The department of Pulmonary Medicine, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Guwahati, commenced its clinical services on 21st August, 2023 followed by other departmental activities in academics and research. The department is being built as a superspeciality medical discipline to cater to the greater healthcare needs of the people of the region and for fulfilling the aspiring needs of medical postgraduates for higher studies in Pulmonary Medicine keeping in alignment with the Central Government’s earnest efforts to reduce the regional imbalances in healthcare sector, both in patient care and medical education.

Vision and mission

The primary vision is to build a state-of-the-art department of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine well equipped to serve the community in critical and chronic respiratory ailments with better diagnostic approach and management for best patient care. Secondly, there is a vision to initiate postdoctoral (DM) course in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine for aspiring medical postgraduates. In order to accomplish these, the following missions are formulated :-

  1. An independent inpatient department (IPD) of Pulmonary Medicine
  2. An independent respiratory intensive care unit (RICU)
  3. Well equipped Pulmonary function testing (PFT) lab, level 1 polysomnography (PSG) lab, and advanced bronchoscopy suite
  4. Initiation of Special clinics, viz., Lung cancer clinic, sleep apnea clinic, DPLD clinic, pulmonary rehabilitation unit, etc.
  5. To carry out genuine high quality research work

Infrastructure :

Currently, the department is privileged with the following basic infrastructure :–

  1. A functional outpatient department (OPD)
  2. A functional well-equipped Pulmonary function testing (PFT) lab including body plethysmography, DLCO, and spirometry
  3. A non-functional inpatient department (IPD)
  4. A non-functional level 1 polysomnography (PSG) lab

Research and Publications :

The department is actively engaged in research activities and publications. Currently involved in multiple intramural and extramural (funded and non-funded) interdepartmental research projects.

Clinical Services :

Currently, the department is providing the following basic Pulmonology services -

  1. OPD - Monday to Friday, 9.00AM - 3.00PM
  2. Pulmonary function testing (PFT) - Monday to Friday, 9.00AM - 3.00PM
  3. IPD interdepartmental referral services

Upcoming services -

  1. 15 bedded IPD
  2. Basic and advanced Interventional Pulmonology services
  3. Level 1 polysomnography

Teaching & Training :

The department is involved in following teaching programmes –

  1. Theory classes for final year MBBS students
  2. Clinics, journal clubs, and seminars of Medicine postgraduate trainees
  3. Theory classes for postgraduate trainees of Pharmacy (in collaboration with NIPER, Guwahati)
