Department of Neonatology, AIIMS Guwahati

 Vision:

      The Department of Neonatology has the objective to become a regional center of excellence in comprehensive quality neonatal care in Northeast India for clinical services, neonatal care training, research, and innovations and thereby facilitate intact neonatal survival, for a healthier future of India.

Mission:

      Our mission is to establish comprehensive newborn care services with an emphasis on developmentally supportive and family-centered care, to create an innovative and research-facilitating environment, and to lay the foundation for setting up training programs for future neonatologists. 

Scope of services:

      The Department of Neonatology had its modest beginning in August 2023 with the starting of dedicated Neonatal OPD services. Over the last few months, we have started delivery services and Labour room services. A six-bed Neonatal intensive care unit has started functioning since September 2024. The list of services being provided currently is below:

  • Antenatal counseling
  • Delivery Room Care
  • Postnatal neonatal care
  • Breastfeeding support and lactation counseling
  • Care of sick neonates
  • Comprehensive newborn screening
  • Extremely low birth weight care
  • Low birth weight neonatal care
  • Extremely premature newborn care 
  • Care of newborns with surgical conditions and congenital malformations
  • Family-centered Neonatal care
  • Kangaroo Mother Care services
  • Community outreach neonatal services 
  • Well baby clinics

Expansion planned for the future:

   Clinical Services

  • To establish a 40-bedded state-of-the-art tertiary care neonatal referral center in AIIMS Guwahati
  • To establish a dedicated Outborn NICU along with a transport linkage system with nearby neonatal facilities especially for the timely initiation of therapy for neonates with perinatal asphyxia
  • To establish a multidisciplinary neonatal High risk follow clinic and a model early intervention centre catering to the entire northeast India
  • Regular mentoring visits, and hand-holding of SNCUs of Assam, Meghalaya, and other northeast states
  • Establishment of a Comprehensive Lactational Management Unit
  • Establishment of neonatal sub-specialty clinics
  • To start outreach, emergency, and transport in/out services for neonates

   Academics and teaching

  • Establish post-doctoral fellowship and DM Neonatology courses in Neonatology
  • Establishment of certificate courses/ MSc courses for neonatal nursing in collaboration with the College of Nursing
  • Regular training of Medical Officers and Neonatal Nurses across the State and start observer-ship courses for training of Medical Officers and Nurses in AIIMS Guwahati for a period of 2 weeks
  • To develop as a regional collaborative center for various training programs in association with scientific organizations such as UNICEF, NNF, IAP, and other NGOs

   Research

  • To develop national and international collaboration for clinical trials
  • Getting research grants for neonatal projects
  • Research publications in high-impact factor journals
