Department of Neurology, AIIMS Guwahati

  INTRODUCTION :

The Department of Neurology has been established to provide tertiary level  patient care services, teaching, and research in the field of Neurology. Neurology is a complex and intellectually exciting discipline. The previous three decades have shown the blossoming of new discoveries in the field of Neurology. Several advancements in genetics, molecular biology, pharmacology, and imaging, have revolutionized the field of Neurology.

VISION AND MISSION :

The department of Neurology is provided with state of the art diagnostic facilities comprising of EEG, Video EEG, EMG, NCS,VEP, BAER, PSG, RTMS along with OPD, IPD facilities. The department has adequate infrastructure for teaching and research activities as well. 

The department endeavours to provide comprehensive patient care, teaching, and training of students, and contribute to research.

Sub-specialty clinics for  Movement disorders, Headache, Stroke, Epilepsy, Dementia, Neuromuscular disorders,  Sleep disorders, and Neuroimmunology  will be functional for the benefit of patients as well as students and researchers.

The department envisions to start a Stroke Unit for comprehensive management of various stroke patient, with facilities for thrombolysis, post thrombolysis care, management of co-morbidities, rehabilitation, and detailed workup.

The department has plans to start a Comprehensive Epilepsy Centre to cater to patients of epilepsy in a holistic manner, comprising of investigation with EEG, Video-EEG, Neuroimaging, with facilities for Neuromodulation, and pre-surgical workup.          

The department envisions to provide the state of the art training in Neurology by it’s  DM (Neurology), PhD (Neurology)  programmes.

The department has plans to start BSc  programme for Neuro-technicians. 

In keeping up with the rapid progress in Neuromodulation, the department has a vision to start regular Neuromodulation services for various neurological disorders, and also to start training in Neuromodulation.     

The department  undertakes regular outreach OPD services and superspeciality referrals, as well as undertakes  awareness activities to spread awareness about various neurological diseases and the need for treatment.

Clinical neuroscience has partnered with other disciplines to undertake research in the field of neuromodulation and nanotechnologies. The department has projects with other departments in the field of research.

Infrastructure :

OPD : Located in the second floor of OPD building, the Neurology OPD has six OPD rooms for faculty and senior resident doctors.

Treatment Room : there is one well equipped treatment room, which is utilised as Botox clinic, and for minor OPD procedures.

Neurophysiology Lab : There are three rooms in neurophysiology lab. Equipped with Video EEG machine, NCV/EMG/VEP/EP machine, PSG machine, RTMS machine.

DEMO/SEMINAR ROOM : there is one seminar room in the OPD , with a sitting capacity of 50 people, and audio-visual facility.

Store : there is one store room for storing of drugs for OPD use.

IPD : Located in the 6th floor of IPD building, the Neurology IPD has 16 beds capacity.

Doctor’s Room : one doctor’s room located in Neurology ward

Nursing Officer Room : one 

Isolation room : one isolation room in neurology ward for in-patient use

Demo Room : one demo/seminar room in IPD ward with audio-visual facility

Store : one IPD store for neurology department

Clinical Services :

OUTPATIENT SERVICES:

NEUROLOGY OPD: MONDAY TO FRIDAY 9 AM TO 4 PM (PATIENT REGISTRATION TILL 2 PM)

Saturday : by appointment

SPECIALITY CLINICS :    

EPILEPSY CLINIC ON THURSDAYS 10 AM TO 1 PM

STROKE CLINIC ON FRIDAYS 10 AM TO 1 PM

BOTOX CLINIC (on an appointment basis) for movement disorders, post-stroke rehabilitation, chronic migraine

EEG : The department provides EEG/Video EEG services for outpatients, inpatients, HDU and ICU patients, and referral patients.

NCV/EMG/VEP/RNS : The department provides neurophysiology investigations for outpatients, inpatients and referral patients.

Polysomnography (PSG) : The department has the facility to provide Sleep studies for diagnostic and therapeutic purpose.

RTMS (Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) : RTMS services for diagnostic and therapeutic purpose

The department provides INPATIENT SERVICES : The department admits patients for evaluation and treatment of sick patients as per admission protocol.

The department also conducts  diagnostic procedures of Muscle Biopsy and Nerve Biopsy.

TELE-CONSULTATION : The department provides teleconsultation services daily (Monday to Friday) as per appointment.

OUTREACH ACTIVITY : The department is providing once-a-week outreach services in designated areas requiring Neurology speciality services.

PATIENT AWARENESS ACTIVITY : The department conducts patient awareness activities in the community as well as in the hospital during “World Stroke Day “, “International Epilepsy Day”, “National Epilepsy Day”.

Teaching & Training :

  1. The department of Neurology has started D.M. (Neurology) course programme
  2. The department has started PhD Neurology programme
  3. The department is involved in teaching M.D. (Medicine) students
  4. The department is involved in M.B;B.S. teaching
  5. The department also takes classes for Defence Services doctors, and Medical Officers (organized by Trauma and Emergency department)
  6. The department is involved in orientation classes for Nursing Officers, and Paramedical workers.
  7. Stroke protocol classes are conducted for Resident Doctors and  Nursing Officers
