Department of General Medicine

Introduction:

The Department of General Medicine at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Guwahati, was started in the year 2022, and services to the Outpatient were started in April 2023. The first batch of MBBS with a strength of 50 students was started in 2021.

Services:

The Department runs OPD six days a week from Monday to Friday (9.00 AM to 2.00 PM) and Saturday (from 9.00 AM to 12 Noon). The department presently provides services related to General Medicine along with specialized services like Rheumatology, Tropical and Infectious diseases, Geriatrics, and Metabolic diseases, including Diabetes, Thyroid diseases. The department is also involved in the delivery and facilitation of health and health-related services including medical care, provider and patient education, health information services, and self-care via telecommunications and digital communication technologies.

  • The Department of General Medicine at AIIMS, Guwahati, envisages acting as a referral center for the people of the Northeast region and neighboring countries that will provide excellent healthcare services.
  • Facilities for routine procedures like Pleural and Peritoneal aspiration, Lumber puncture, and Bone marrow aspiration are also performed.
  • The department also provides day care services like the monthly pulse of Cyclophosphamide for different autoimmune diseases, Albumin infusion for patients with decompensated liver disease, and injection of biological agents like Infliximab, Rituximab, Adalimumab for different connective tissue diseases.

Vision:

  • To start special OPD clinics including Rheumatology, Diabetes, and Geriatric.
  • To start a Post-graduate MD course in General Medicine, Fellowship courses in Rheumatology and Infectious diseases
  • To establish a center of excellence for research in Infectious diseases and Rheumatology.
  • To establish a setup to provide medical education with excellent clinical exposure and state-of-the-art teaching and learning facilities.
  • To collaborate and develop a network for research activities with the other institutions in the region to take on the responsibility of leading medical research in the Northeast region of India. 

Academics:

Faculties are actively involved in teaching programs for undergraduate MBBS students of the Institute. The department conducts regular CME, online teaching programs, faculty development programs in collaboration with the medical education unit, and regular classes for resident doctors and nursing staff. Faculties are also involved in multiple research projects and publications in collaboration with other institutes of national and international importance.
